Some rules and regulations of West Indies and Special

Collections

  • The WI&SC Reading room is reserved for persons consulting material from the West Indies and Special Collections.
  • Undergraduates are not allowed to use the area for general study.
  • Undergraduates are advised to use copies of West Indian material made available in RBC. If the material is not available in RBC for a good reason, the librarian in RBC should call WI&SC to request that the student be allowed to use the copy in WI&SC.

Treasures from West Indies and Special Collections

A display was mounted in the WI&SC link way highlighting maroon heritage. An interesting item that was displayed was a ceremonial Saramaca Maroon garment presented to the late Samuel Bandara who was a participant in an archaeological expedition in August 1998. The gift was presented to WI&SC July 2005.

Archibald Cooper

The display includes unpublished papers and documents by Mr. Archibald Cooper. Mr. Cooper was collecting the material from the Maroon Village of Accompong but died before he completed his dissertation. He collected the materials between 1938 and

1939. His wife donated the materials to the library.

These would make an interesting area of research for persons seeking an area to do their PhD, especially in the area of history and heritage studies. Are there any takers?

WEST INDIES & SPECIAL LIBRARY BLOG

This blog was developed to highlight sections/aspects of the collections for the purpose of informing members of staff about WI&SC. This is especially useful to persons who mann the reference desk.
